Update
Good morning everyone,
I realize it has been over a year since my last post and there is much that has happened since my last post. I believe that in my last post I had mentioned that was taking a couple of interesting courses, for those of you who didn't read the last post, the courses were History of the modern police, and Social and Intellectual History of the United States. Those course were for the January 2009 semester. I wrote some interesting essays for those two courses, one on the perception of crime in a small PG community called the Island Cache, and the other essay was on the History of Baseball in the United States. Anyways, if you are really interested in the results of those essays just ask me.
Since that post, I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in May 2009 (Major in History, with a minor in Human Geography), and also got accepted into the Education program at UNBC. I've really enjoyed MOST of my courses in the program and have learned very much. However, the practicum was the most fun I have every had in university! I was placed at College Heights Secondary School and was assigned a grade 11 Social Studies class to teach. The best part was, my cooperating teacher (CT) was MY grade 11 Social Studies teacher from PGSS!
For the first teaching practicum, we were only supposed to teach one class, then observe and help out for two of our cooperating teacher's classes, and have one period of prep. So, I was teaching the Grade 11s in block A, observing grade 12 Comparative Civilizations in block B, observing another grade 11 SS class in block C, and prep block D. However, my CT liked one of my lessons I did with the block A class so much that he wanted me to teach block C as well! So I ended up getting two classes! It was such a valuable experience because I got to see that some things work with one class, and they did not work with the other.
On top of having TWO awesome classes, one of my good friends from the program, who also teachers Social Studies, got placed at CHSS as well. Incidentally, his classroom was right next door to mine as well, and he was teaching SS 11 also! So, we were constantly bouncing ideas off of each other, and I borrowed him for a few lessons in my class (during his prep) and he borrowed me for some of his lessons during my prep.
To conclude, I'll say that it was only a three week practicum, but I already really miss those kids in my class, and I can't wait for one of my weeks of holiday, so I can go help out in the class again and see how they are all doing. I learned so much just being out in the actual classroom and I can't wait for the long practicum in February!
