WDCAG 2007
Good evening Ladies, and Gentlemen.
I've been informed that it is about time for a new post so here we go! I must confess there have not been any recent "Stupid-Customers-at-Work" stories, for two reasons. The first being the fact that I have not been working that much lately, the second, being the fact that when I have worked it's been pretty good. But on a brighter note, I do have news to bring you up-to-date!
On Thursday morning at 8:00am, seven individuals set out on an adventure! They travelled through the canyons to a place the ancient ones called Abbotsford. They set out on the beast called Dodge 15 passenger Van, under the guidance of their trusted leaders President Carolyn, and Vice President Andrew... and of course the wise one they call Professor Bruce. They were summoned to an ancient council long forgotten, meeting with all the wise sages from the west. They call this secret council... The Western Division of the Canadian Association of Geographers (WDCAG).
That's right folks, the CNC Geography club has been fundraising all year so we could go to Abbotsford for the annual Geography conference, and boy what a blast it was!!!! For those of you who don't know what this annual WDCAG conference is about, it's pretty much the exact same thing as DYC except for geographers. But, I shall start from the beginning.
As my epic tale hinted at, we left on Thursday March 8th at 8:00 am. and we drove down, making stops at different areas of geographical interest. We stopped to view the rock formations, and Cultural Geography in Stone Creek, then we stopped at the Basalt columns somewhere else along the way. Then we stopped at Chasm to view the evidence of Glaciation, and the rift that if formed, and finally we stopped just before Cache Creek, to demonstrate how Cache Creek used to be the bottom of a lake. Then one of our fearless leaders Cliff had to break away and head to Kamloops to watch his son play in the basketball tournament. We drove the rest of the way to Abbotsford and finally arrived at around 6:00pm or so. We got settled in our rooms, and the decided to go for supper at Milestones... great place to eat. Then we went back to the hotel for a little Johnny Cash guitar, and laughs. Tim and Michelle brought with them a really hilarious comedy CD, we were rolling on the floor laughing! Then we called it a night for the next day's adventure.
Friday:
The next morning we drove to the University College of the Fraser Valley with a few extra passengers. The students from the University of Lethbridge were staying at the same place and asked for a lift down. After we got registered, we waited for the bus to come pick us up for Friday's field trip (everyone went on a different field trip). They rented nice charter buses for the trips! I felt like Captain Picard in the Captain's chair or something! Our field trip took us an hours bus ride to the Lynn Valley in Vancouver, to view the Glacial activity and residue from the past 12,000 BP. Very interesting...These trails were like a rain forests, and it was also interesting to see the glacial activity in that area. After the field trip we got taken back to the University, and waited for our professor Bruce to finish his field trip. Then we went back to the hotel to buy beverages *ahem* for later that evening at 4:30. Then next part of the conference was at 7:00, but only Bruce, Brian and I went to the Keynote speaker's presentation, because the rest of our group was already tired from the day. The UNBC crew made it just in time for the Keynote (they left Friday morning), and after that we went back to the hotel for 9 to prepare for the next day of the conference.
Saturday:
Saturday was the part of the conference where Undergraduate students, Graduate students, and Professors all do presentations on various topics. You could choose to go to what ever sessions you want. *I actually got in a fight with a guy name "Thorn bush"... my knuckles were bleeding pretty bad... but you should see his face!* The presentation were awesome, and I got to meet some real cool people too! After the last presentation for the day (4:30) we headed back to the hotel to freshen up for the banquet at 7. Around 5:30 we get a knock on our door, and it was our professor, and he tells us that he decided we are going to take taxis down because he wanted to have some drinks... cool! So we head to the banquet and I start socializing with our group, and I go and buy myself a glass of Red wine, and then got asked to have my picture taken with 3 of my heroes (Geography professors from CNC and UNBC)... and then the announcement that dinner was going to be served came over the intercom. So Bruce and I go to take our seats, and Bruce finishes his wine... and waits a bit then he gets up and goes to the bar, and comes back with 4 glasses of wine! One for Jim and Alistyre (Geography professors), and we all laughed because we thought the other two were for him... So I finish my wine, and put the glass out of my way... and then..... Bruce gave me another glass of Wine!!!!! Call me a nerd, but I thought it was so cool, drinking wine with my Geography professor!! We all thought it was pretty cool. So supper ended (It was really tasty!) and the dance started... and I tell you folks, the last time I busted a move was in grade 10! Boy has music changed since then!!! But it was all in fun. I loved taking pictures of people with Amber's camera (It was very similar to Peter's fancy one)!! The dance was a great time!
Sunday:
Then at last the sad trip home. One of the funnest weekends ever came to an end. I tell you folks, this was one of the greatest trips I have EVER experienced, and a cannot wait to do it again next year! :)
